MATTOON — Mother Nature wasn't about to beat Lake Land softball coach Nic Nelson all week. After having to move around a majority of its schedule this week due to the constant rain, Nelson was ready to play a doubleheader against Southwestern Illinois College on Friday for a doubleheader.
He needed some help to get the field ready, though, after a week of it taking on water from all of the rain. He got help from Jimmy Shoot, John Hendricks and Dave and Madden Johnson.
With their help, the field was ready to play at 3 p.m. on Friday and Lake Land won both games in five innings, 13-1 and 8-0.
"It was all about Mother Nature. I gotta thank Jimmy Shoot. He came out with the leaf blower to blow water out of the infield. John Hendricks, Dave Johnson and his youngest son, they helped me move water," Nelson said. "It was an all-out effort, but we got the games in."
Lake Land improved to 28-11 overall and 16-2 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. The Lady Lakers have won six straight games. It was the first action in seven games for Lake Land.
"The girls played really well for being off for a while. They didn't let the weather affect them," Nelson said. "We hit well. Defensively, we didn't have an error. Holly Marousek had a perfect game going until the first batter of the fifth inning and then lost the no-hitter and the shutout. She pitched well and Braylyn Burdick gave up only one hit in the second game, and Sydney Rawlings went three-up and three-down."
In the first game, Haylee Short went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Delanie Johnson drove in two runs, Rachael Quaritsch was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, Alina Lance was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs, Allie Helton was 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Sophie Cooper drove in two RBIs.
Marousek gave up only one hit and struck out four to get the win.
In the second game, Short drove in a run, Johnson was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, Quaritsch drove two runs, Lance was 2-for-3 with a double, a solo home run and two RBIs, Kendall Hastings was 2-for-2 with a double, and Maddy Adams was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Burdick pitched four innings, gave up only one hit and struck out six. Rawlings struck out one in one inning.
