MATTOON -- Over 80 lifters, including an Olympic team contender who finished in fifth place at the recent World Weightlifting Championships, highlight Saturday's Mattoon YMCA Winter Open Weightlifting Meet.

Marissa Klingseiss of St. Joseph, Mo., highlights several outstanding lifters expected to compete from at least four different states. Klingseiss recently made lifts of 231 and a half pounds in the snatch and 295.4 pounds in the clean and jerk at the world championships. She is likely be the last female competitor to lift at about 3:30 p.m. or so.

"Marissa is a real talent and deserves the accolades she gets. She has been working hard since she was 9," Charleston-Mattoon coach Marty Schnorf said of Klingseiss, now in her early 20's.

Other lifters with international experience include St. Joseph, Mo., lifter Zach Burks who clean and jerks over 400 pounds at age 19 and Charleston High School grad and lifter Bret Pfeiffer, who is home from Northern Michigan University where he attends college on a weightlifting scholarship. Charleston/Mattoon Weightlifting Club coach Troy Pfeiffer said he expects good lifts from both of them. "Zack may clean and jerk over 400 pounds, and Bret is home on break and is in pretty good shape. He heads back to Northern Michigan University the day after the meet."

The competition starts at approximately. 9:30 a.m. Saturday and is to last until approximately 4:30 p.m.

Both Schnorf and Pfeiffer commented on the fact that the meet was only possible due to the great cooperation they get from the Mattoon YMCA and the meet sponsor.

"We are very fortunate to have the beautiful facility that the YMCA offers as well as the generous and consistent help Mediacom has offered to us. We have also always gotten incredible support from Mattoon Tourism every time we have asked for their help, " said Schnorf and Pfeiffer.
