Mattoon juniors win seventh straight

RANTOUL -- The Mattoon Post 88 Junior American Legion baseball team won its seventh game in a row Thursday downing Rantoul Post 287 14-2 in a game called after five innings (game was scheduled for nine innings) due to the 10-run rule. 

Post 88 took control early with a seven run opening inning and led 12-0 after two. 

Meade Johnson was perfect in four at-bats for Mattoon with a double and five runs batted in, while Blake Sapp was 2-for-3; Hayden Williams was 1-for-3 with tow runs batted in and Austin Baker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. 

Baker was also the winning pitcher, throwing three innings and allowing two hits and no runs with no walks and five strikeouts for Post 88. 

Mattoon, 25-6-1, is to travel to Paris Sunday for a doubleheader (five innings each game). 

Mattoon juniors fall behind early, come back to beat Decatur

MATTOON — Decator Gold opened the game against Mattoon Post 88 Juniors with three runs, but Post 88 came back with two runs in the second and a run in the third to tie the game. Post 88 took the lead in the fourth and pulled away with five runs in the fifth. Post 88 Juniors went on to beat Decatur Gold 12-3 on Wednesday at Mattoon High School.

Meade Johnson went the first five innings to get the win and then Blake Sapp pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four.

Sapp was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and three RBIs, Mason Wright hit a double and had three RBIs, Drew Coffey was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Hayden Williams and Zach Wetzel were each 2-for-3 with two runs and Sean South scored twice and had an RBI.
