MATTOON -- The deadline to apply for scholarships through Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation is Thursday, Feb. 14 (the Michael Alan Fuller Scholarship deadline is March 1). All applications and references must be completed by this deadline. This year, the Community Foundation has more than $250,000 available in scholarship awards for qualifying students.
The Community Foundation offers four scholarships to students from Mattoon High School.
The Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship honors the memory of the late Arland D. Williams, Jr. who grew up in Mattoon. Williams became a well-known example of extraordinary heroism when his actions saved five people after a 1982 airplane crash in Washington D.C. His selfless actions cost him his life. To qualify for the Arland D. Williams, Jr. Scholarship, applicants must be graduates of Mattoon Senior High School, exhibit high qualities of character, and must be a college junior, senior or graduate student in good academic standing at the time of the award. Applicants must be majoring in the fields of finance, banking, accounting, economics or computer sciences in order to be considered.
The Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship was established to provide college scholarships to one or more applicants who major or will major in visual arts, graphic arts or performing arts. Applicants must be a current graduating senior or alum of Mattoon High School, or must reside or formerly resided in the Mattoon school district when earning a high school diploma or equivalent certification. Recipients of the scholarship shall be determined by a committee appointed by the Mattoon Arts Council. Previous recipients of the Lebovitz Lively Arts Scholarship are welcome to re-apply.
The Mattoon High School Alumni Scholarship was established in 2011 to provide assistance for Mattoon High School seniors pursuing higher education. Scholarships are available to Mattoon High School graduating seniors planning to attend a two-year college, four-year college or university, or vocational/technical school.
