MATTOON -- The Copper Creek Cottages Memory Care location that opened this summer in Mattoon specializes in meeting the needs of those who have Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other forms of memory loss.

Copper Creek offers 26 one-bedroom apartments, plus four two-bedroom apartments for couples, in its newly constructed building at 920 Country Club Road. These living units have been designed as characteristic cottage-front apartments to aid in "home" recognition by the memory care residents.

Michelle Sowell, marketing director for Copper Creek's Senior Health Specialties management company in Effingham, said each cottage front is painted in one of five choices of colors. She said the cottage fronts also have flower boxes and porch lights that can be left on for the residents.

"We use those porch lights a lot when we have a new arrival. They are great," said Lauren Fryer, administrator for Copper Creek in Mattoon. She added that the residents furnish their apartments with their personal belongings to help them adjust to their new surroundings.

Copper Creek's other services include 24-hour care by staff members specializing in assisting those who have Alzheimer's disease and dementia; medication management and health evaluations by licensed nurses; emergency call response systems; secured exits; and support and education for families.

Sowell said the building is divided into two sides with 15 apartments. She said this creates a small group setting in each side and enables staff members to spend more time one-on-one with residents.

Each side of the building has a common area with a dining room where residents can share breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, each side has a secured courtyard where residents can relax in the fresh air and take part in cookouts for special occasions.

"It's a homey atmosphere. Pretty much, we are a big family," Fryer said of Copper Creek.

Fryer said Copper Creek also offers a variety of activities for residents on a regular basis, including arts and crafts, bingo, card games, dominoes, exercise programs, movies and musical entertainment.

Copper Creek has available apartments and is accepting reservations for its Mattoon location, at the northeast corner of Country Club Road and Dettro Drive. More information is available by calling 217-235-001 or by going online to
