DECATUR — The Herald & Review won six awards in the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors 2018 newspaper contest, including the top prize for a series on farm safety.
The first-place Enterprise Series award is for a multi-part package of stories about safety issues on small farms. It published this summer.
Second-place honors were awarded in the breaking news coverage category for reporting on December's Taylorville tornado, for columns by Central Illinois Editor Chris Coates, and for a profile on former Macon County Sheriff Howard Buffet by Ryan Voyles. The newspaper also received third-place awards for investigative journalism and for Jim Bowling's photograph of International Mud Day at the group BABY Talk.
Additional top awards will be announced during the annual convention of the Illinois Press Association on May 2 in Springfield.
Thirty-five daily newspapers submitted 916 entries in the contest, organizers said.
