MATTOON -- The Rural King farm and home store company is moving its Mattoon store location to the former Sears space at the Cross County Mall to drive more traffic to the mall and other businesses in the area. The new store location is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

The current Mattoon store facility, located at 4216 Dewitt Ave., will continue to serve as a distribution center, and the company headquarters there will be expanded into the current Rural King store space.

Mattoon's store move is the latest in a series of improvements at the Cross County Mall. Most recently, Scotty’s Brewhouse, a restaurant that specializes in craft-beers, opened in December.

Rural King Realty, the real estate division of its parent company, reported that it has been working to revitalize the mall since taking ownership of this property in late 2017. The company reports to be in conversations with several other future tenants it hopes can help keep the mall a community destination.

“Rural King believes its future success is tied to the future success of the Mattoon community. The acquisition of the mall was a strategic commitment to this community, and we plan to continue to invest here in this area that has given us so much," Rural King Chief Executive Officer Alex Melvin said in a press release.

The new Mattoon Rural King store at the east end of the Cross County Mall will still provide customers with everything Rural King is known for, including free coffee and popcorn. The store will continue to offer RK Tractors, livestock and pet supplies, tools, and more.

At the mall, the Rural King store will have an exterior entrance with a 60-foot steel awning where customers will be able to load merchandise or shuttle passengers while sheltered from inclement weather. The store also will have an interior entrance at the east end of the mall concourse. There will be cash registers at both entrances.

Rural King planted its roots in Mattoon in 1960, operating in several locations over time on the west side of town. In 1999, the company moved the store, office, and distribution center across the street to the current location. This facility at 4216 Dewitt has had several additions over the years as the company has grown.

Now, Rural King reported that it is one of the fastest growing family-owned companies in America and has added more than 100 stores in a 13-state area.
