Former EIU athlete Lauren Doyle helps USA rugby qualify for 2020 Olympics

Former Eastern Illinois student-athlete Lauren Doyle was instrumental in helping the Team USA Women’s Rugby squad qualify for the its second Olympic Games as they won the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Biarritz, France over the weekend.

The team entered the season ending event ranked fourth in the world and secured a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games by just stepping on the field. Instead the team posted an impressive 26-10 win over New Zealand to win the event.

After building a 19-5 lead going into halftime, Doyle (a former EIU women’s rugby player and track athlete), scored to open the second half allowing the US team to pick up the title.

Doyle was a member of the US National Team that participated in the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro when Women’s Rugby Sevens made it’s Olympic debut.

She is currently a co-captain of the US Women’s Rugby Sevens National Team and finished the HSBC World Sevens Series with trys (scores) against all three pool play opponents (Fiji, China and France).

Eastern Illinois had several former women’s basketball players wrap up professional seasons overseas and one current player that is active this summer as part of her National Team.

Current Eastern Illinois center Claudia Stan was selected to play this summer as a member of the Romanian National Team. Stan, a 6-5 native of Bucharest, redshirted last season for the Panthers after playing two seasons at Vincennes University. 

Chantelle Pressley wrapped up her season overseas playing for C.B. Arxil PonteVedra in Spain. A former All-English League selection, Pressley averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Sabina Oroszova played this past season for Valosun KP Brno in the Czech Republic. A member of the Slovakian National Team, Oroszova averaged 8.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game this year.

Mariah King opened the season with Basket Slovanka MB Tabor in the Czech Republic but did not finish the 2018-19 season with the team.

Pressley and Oroszova are currently playing in the 2019 FIBA Women’s Eurobasket Tournament in Latvia, Serbia. Pressley plays for Great Britain having appeared in two games so far averaging 1.5 points and 2 rebounds per game. Oroszova plays for Slovakia having playing in two games averaging 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the tournament.
