Many of you may remember from my previous article that 2019 marks the 100th year of the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce but did you know that this year also marks the 100th year anniversary of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce? In 1919, during a time of fast-paced changes for our state and country, 24 industry leaders gathered from around the state to meet in Quincy, Illinois. It was at this meeting that the leaders were tasked with finding the best options to promote and protect the business climate in Illinois. As a result of this meeting, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce was charted by the Secretary of State, which would effectively unite the business community throughout the state.

From the start of its inception, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce has been a driving force of the state. The Illinois Chamber of Commerce was active in the formation of both the Illinois State Police, the State Planning Commission, and the State Board of Education. Throughout its years, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce has worked to lower property taxes, improve opportunities in the workforce, and promote pro-business reforms throughout Illinois. As it was in its inception, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce continues to make Illinois a better place for its residents and business professionals.

Jessica Killough is president and CEO for the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce.
