Mr. Charlie Jaques’s and Ms. Renae Hernandez’s junior and senior science classes went on a field trip on December 6th to see Sam Rhine’s Genetics Update Conference at Lake Land College from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The students who attended are interested in careers such as nursing, medicine, and various fields of biology. The four-hour Genetics Update Conference was packed with the newest discoveries and applications in medical genetics and tissue engineering. Dr. Sam Rhine is an expert in the field of genetics and has spent the last 30+ years traveling the world giving these lectures to high school and college students alike. The point of this conference is to expose college bound students to the exciting possibilities surrounding the field of biology and genetics.
“I went last year, and Dr. Rhine was talking about cancer and how to use CRISPR to treat diseases. It gave me insight as to how cancer works as a disease and how we can use CRISPR to improve our health. It really solidified what I wanted to do after I graduate high school,” said senior Wade Hudson.
