CASEY -- Jerry Lee Trigg, age 75, of Casey, IL passed away at 9:02 a.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County Illinois. He was born July 16, 1942 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN, the son of Fred Trigg and Thelma Ann Hunsaker Trigg.
Survivors include his cousins, Judy (Griffith) Greathouse and husband Larry of Bentonville, AR, Barbara (Sutherland) Wightman and husband Jim of Lone Tree, CO, Bill Cornwell and wife Jan of Lancaster, OH and Gary Hunsaker of Yale, IL, his many friends, his loving church family and the residents and staff of Heartland Nursing Center. In addition to kin, the family acknowledges Mary Gard who was a blessing in his life, providing care, love and rides to church for many years while Jerry was in nursing care. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, many aunts and uncles and cousins, Andrea Greathouse and Steve Hunsaker.
Jerry was an Elder of the Casey Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he had a long history of service and faithfulness. He performed multiple church duties in the service of our Lord, including children's Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school, usher and acolyte. He did frequent readings and recitations and rang the big church bell at the beginning of the service. He was known by many Casey residents for his love of children and pets. He was well known for riding his bike around town with his pet dachshund in the basket and handing out gum and candy to eager children. He decorated his bike and rode it in many 4th of July and home coming parades. Every Labor Day for many years, Jerry worked tirelessly collecting money for the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Jerry had a rough start in life due to a birth injury. This led to him being bullied in school while in Arizona. At age 16 when the family returned to Casey, Jerry didn't want to enroll in school. He became self-educated and attained a knowledge of the Bible, Civil War and Old West that exceeded most college educated scholars. Jerry loved to travel and he relished the opportunity to live in Spain for 6 months and to visit his relatives in many states including Alaska. Described by many as a gentle soul, Jerry was cooperative and agreeable throughout his life. His love for animals and children and service to his Lord showed what a loving nature he had. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the community that he loved.
