MATTOON -- Laurence E. Montgomery, age 90, of Mattoon passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
Funeral services honoring his life will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 Charleston Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Pastor Adam Jacobsen officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Schilling Funeral Home.
Laurence was born on December 27, 1927 in Elbow, IL the son of William Russell and Mabel Louisa (Rule) Montgomery. He married Phyllis A. Nolte on March 14, 1948. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2017.
Survivors include his children, Gary L. (Deb) Montgomery of Red Oak, TX, Alan E. (Judy) Montgomery of Mattoon, IL, Joy L. (Verne) Adkins of Mattoon, IL and Calvin R. Montgomery of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Laurence “Larry” (Tina) Montgomery of Franklin, WI, Devon (Doug) Hottinger of Bedford, TX, Scott (Jessie) Montgomery of Gays, IL, Carrie (Josh) Bales McKinney of Mattoon, IL, Kallie (Scott) Harris of Mattoon, IL and Korey Adkins of Lisle, IL; and nine great-grandchildren; sister, Lauraetta Locke of Charleston, IL. Laurence was preceded in death by his parents; grandson-in-law, Kelly Bales; and sister, Lorene Gaston.
Laurence was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mattoon. He was a farmer and member of the Farm Bureau all of his life. Laurence was the drainage commissioner and served on the township board until his retirement. In earlier years, he worked at Blaw Knox and as a carpenter for Schrock’s. Laurence was an avid collector of toy farm tractors. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
