MATTOON -- William “Bill” Jones Jr., age 79, of Mattoon passed away at 7:17 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services honoring his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Speer officiating. Burial will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Schilling Funeral Home.
Bill was born on June 4, 1938 in Forest City, AR the son of Will and Minnie (Peacock) Jones. He married Lily Read. He later married Beverly McClaskey. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2010.
Survivors include his children, Gloria (Steve) Spear, Cheryl Jones, Deborah Jones, William Jones III, Jeff (Debra) Jones, Anthony Jones Lorelei (Jim) Bumpus and Lisa Reardon; siblings, Jimmy Jones, Walter Smith, Laura King, Willa Angel and Margaret Jones-Rax, as well as 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; children, Wanda Sue Jones, Steven Wilson and Carroll Derixson, Willie Estrada; grandchildren, Jamie Sue Wilson and Jared Whitehurst, siblings, Ethel Adkins, Madeline Johnson, Clarence Foster, Claude Jones, Amanda Rivera, Sarah Jones and Lydia Johnson.
Bill was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Union Local 841 for over 50 years. He enjoyed using his talent to help the city of Mattoon with numerous projects including Mattoon Police Shooting Range and the boys baseball complex. More recently, he enjoyed volunteering at the Mattoon Food Pantry. He had a special place in his heart for A. J. Walker Construction, Mattoon Public Works, and law enforcement, and took every opportunity to spend time and support those who were lucky enough to work with these organizations.
