MATTOON -- Winifred Rose Dettro, age 85 of Mattoon, IL peacefully passed away surrounded by her family at 12:52 P.M., Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Mattoon Health Care Center.
The funeral service in her honor will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938 with Reverend Michael Smith officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery in Mattoon, IL. The visitation will be held Monday evening, March 5, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Winifred was born June 1, 1932 in New Baden, IL, the daughter of Dr. John and Winifred (Scott) Hardy. She married Dr. Roger Dettro on August 15, 1953 in Effingham, IL; he survives his dear wife. Other survivors include one son, Greg Dettro and wife Betsy of St. Charles, IL; six grandchildren, Dr. Tyler Dettro of Syracuse, NY, Scott Dettro of St. Charles, IL, Dr. Heather Felton and husband Adam of Louisville, KY, Stephanie Kisselbaugh and husband Kinley of Carmel, IN, Kyle Dettro of Chicago, IL, and Alexis Harrison and husband Sean of Normal, IL; three great- grandchildren, Katherine and Claire Felton, and Annabelle Rose Kisselbaugh. She is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dr. Mark Dettro; two brothers, Dr. John “Jack” Hardy and Kenneth Hardy; and one sister, Edith Louise Hardy.
Winifred had a unique college education, changing schools every year. Winifred attended her freshman year at Stephens College in Columbia, MO, sophomore year at the University of Illinois, junior year at Eastern Illinois University, and graduated her senior year from the University of Illinois with a teaching degree. She was a teacher in the St. Louis School System while Roger attended Dental School at Washington University. Winifred loved traveling and made several special trips and memories in Europe with friends. She had many hobbies including gardening, sewing, needlepoint, and especially working on puzzles. Winifred was an avid reader and belonged to the Home Culture Literary Club, the oldest literary club in Coles County. She kept busy with various community and philanthropy activities: serving on the Board of Directors of the Mattoon Public Library, an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Friends of the Mattoon Public Library, Panhellenic Club, and Life Member of Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital Guild. Winifred cherished time spent with her friends but above all she loved her family and always centered her life around them.
