Alpha Upsilon to hold October business meeting
MATTOON -- The Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha will hold its October business meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Mattoon Area Family YMCA meeting room.
The educational program, "The Scope of ESA", will be presented by Suzi Coffman and the Rush Committee.

Fall fest to be held at First Fruits Homestead
CHARLESTON -- The fourth annual fall festival at First Fruits Homestead will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 14.
The event will feature hay rides, a hay maze, petting zoo, bounce house, cow patty 50/50 raffle, $15 per square need not be present to win, hot pepper contest at 3 p.m. (prizes valued at over $100), face painting, milking contests, pumpkin carving contest, and concessions.
First Fruits Homestead is located at 2436 North County Road, 1800 East, in Charleston. From Charleston, take Illinois Route 130 South to 300 North, turn right, and follow the signs for the homestead.

College to offer free food sanitation classes
MATTOON -- Lake Land College’s Adult Education is offering free food sanitation classes at various locations for the first 12 applicants who register.
Those who complete the course will receive a Food Protection Manager certification, which is valid for five years. While there is no cost to attend the classes, the test costs $36.
The class locations and dates are as follows:
- Western Region Center, 600 E. First St., Pana – Fridays, Oct. 20 and 27, 5-9:30 p.m.
- Kluthe Center for Higher Education and Technology, 1204 Network Centre Blvd., Effingham – Saturdays, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Lake Land College, Workforce Development Center, 305 Richmond Ave. E., Mattoon – Saturdays, Dec. 2 and 9, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

IDOT winter operations positions still available
EFFINGHAM -- The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking workers for temporary jobs to help with snow and ice removal this winter in several southeast Illinois counties in IDOT District 7. These seasonal positions are available for on-call work schedules. The deadline to apply is Oct. 16.
The department's annual “snowbird” program requires employees to promptly respond to weather situations, assisting in snow-and-ice control and working in emergency conditions at any time, including weekends, holidays and nights. Applicants must have a commercial driver’s license and submit to a criminal background check. A pre-employment physical, vision testing, and drug and alcohol screening also are required.
