Paris Art Center to hold Lincoln card contest

PARIS -- The Paris Art Center, along with Altrusa Intl. of Paris, Pearman Pharmacy, and individuals are sponsoring a Lincoln Birthday Card Contest. All fourth- and fifth-grade students in Edgar County are creating birthday cards for Mr. Lincoln.

A panel of judges will pick a grand prize winner, who will receive a $50 award, and first-, second- and third-place winners in each school, who will receive ribbons. Every participating student will receive a certificate.

The cards will be on display at the art center starting Wednesday. The awards will be given out during the Lincoln Birthday Open House at the art center on Sunday. The open house is from 2-4 p.m. The awards will be handed out at 3 p.m. Bring your family and come see the Lincoln birthday cards that will be on display at the art center.

Bluegrass band plans anniversary celebration

ARTHUR -- Members of Mackville, a local bluegrass gospel band from Atwood, have been together for 10 years and are hosting an anniversary celebration on Saturday to be held at Penn Station, 122 E. Progress St.

SBL to host free informational sessions for weight loss

MATTOON -- Sarah Bush Lincoln is hosting a free informational sessions for weight loss at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 5 and 19, and at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Feb. 14 and 28, at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Center for Healthy Living, 1004 Health Center Drive, Suite 212.

The SBL Weight Management Program is a clinically monitored program geared for people of all sizes. Tickets available for fundraiser for health care scholarships

EFFINGHAM -- The 34th annual "Cheers!" event is a fun upscale cocktail party with dancing to raise funds for health care scholarships for area students and will be held March 3 at the Keller Convention Center, 1202 N. Keller Drive.

A 6 p.m. social hour will be followed by dancing and heavy hors d’oeuvres. This event is hosted by the Sarah Bush Lincoln Volunteer Guild and Foundation; the cost is $75 a person. Net revenue supports health care scholarships for area students.
