WCTU to hold meeting

MATTOON -- The East Central Illinois Woman's Christian Temperance Union women members and men honorees will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Airport Steakhouse.

Memoir Writing Group to meet at library

EFFINGHAM -- A memoir writing group will meet at the Suzette Brumleve Memorial Effingham Public Library on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Luttrell Room.

This writing group welcomes newcomers and all level of writers. Typically meeting for two hours, participants are encouraged to bring writing that they’ve worked on to share with the group.

At each meeting, possible writing prompts are shared. Participants are encouraged to consider various aspects of their life story. The writing prompt or assignment to prepare for the February’s meeting is to write about your experience or thoughts on gardening. Each member may read their writing aloud.

During the meeting, participants also have 15 to 20 minutes to write about another topic that will be drawn from an envelope of prompt ideas. It, too, will be shared with the group.

'Men Who Cook' set to aid Children's Advocacy Center

CHARLESTON -- Registration is currently open for "Men Who Cook", a potluck event featuring local men preparing bite-sized samples of their favorite dish to be held Feb. 24 at the Lifespan Center, 11021 East County Road. Tasting will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. that night, with awards to follow.

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample the dishes prepared by the chefs and vote for their favorites. Trophies will be awarded to the top three chefs in each category and the Grand Master Chef will also be named.

Beverages including soft drinks, wine, and beer will be provided. Additional evening fun includes: door prizes, 50/50 raffle, processed hog raffle, and auction items.

This event aims to raise awareness for the Children’s Advocacy Center of East Central Illinois, a not-for-profit agency serving children who are victims of sexual and/or severe physical abuse. There is no charge for this event, however, donations are collected and appreciated.
