Pastor's Prayer Group to meet Thursday

MATTOON -- The Pastor’s Prayer Group will meet at noon Thursday at the Downtown Diner in Mattoon. Pastors and representatives of churches will meet to discuss the need for security measures in places of worship.

After mass shootings in Murphysboro, Tennessee and Southland Springs, Texas, some people believe the question of security must be discussed. Many churches have quietly put in armed off-duty police officers. Is that the best plan? Should we train those with personal carry permits on active shooter techniques? Will your church insurance cover a non-professional security person if the unthinkable should happen? What can churches do with door security, and electronics?

Greg Voudrie will be leading the discussion; a graduate of Mattoon High School, he attended Wheaton College for two years before going into the Marines for four years where he was a sergeant intelligence specialist.

Voudrie served in law enforcement for 27 years including for the Coles County Sheriff's Office, Mattoon and Kansas police departments. He has worked as a corrections officer, narcotics investigator, K9 handler, dare officer, patrol commander and administrator.
