MATTOON -- Keith Wolcott, 61, and John Looby, 63, of Charleston set a new record for crossing Illinois from west to east as a two-person cycling team.
They are the first people to attempt the west-east route as a team and completed the ride in 7 hours and 24 minutes on July 21, starting on the Missouri-Illinois state line in the middle of the Clark Bridge at Alton and finishing at the Illinois-Indiana state line on U.S. Route 40 near Terre Haute, Ind.
Wolcott and Looby rode with an average speed of 20.8 mph, including the time for handoffs. They were assisted by crew members Ellen Wolcott, Judy Looby, Marcus Ricci, and Jerry Boyd. The official for the event was Melissa Boyd.
Cross-state records are recognized by the World Ultra Cycling Association (WUCA) when rides are completed in the presence of a WUCA official and in accordance with WUCA rules.
