Unitarians to discuss many concepts of God
CHARLESTON -- People are sometimes asked if they believe in God, a question usually requiring a simple "yes" or "no" answer.
Far more complicated, though, is the follow-up question: “What exactly is God’s role in your personal life or in the world at large?”
For among the more than 1,500 Christian denominations worldwide, the God believed in ranges from the American Calvinistic view that everyone, including infants, is “born steeped in loathsome sin,” with God monitoring every sin, to the New Wave Christianity of the mega-churches, with gospel-rock bands and high-energy pronouncements of the “joy of sharing and basking in God’s love.”
Most mainstream denominations lie somewhere between the two.
On Sunday, at 10:30 a.m. at Bob’s Bookstore, 303 Lincoln Ave., Roger Whitlow will lead the Unitarian Fellowship of Eastern Illinois in an exploration of the many, widely varying concepts of God in American Christianity.
A casual conversation, with refreshments, will follow. Everyone is welcome. For more information, contact Roger Whitlow at 217-246-5829.
