Sometimes vocal fans can convince a company to bring back a long-discontinued item — other times it seems favorite snacks and drinks just might be lost forever.
Here's a look at some discontinued foods and drinks that have made a successful comeback, as well as a few that many people are still longing for.
Cheez Balls and Cheez Curls
Planters announced in June 2018 the return of Cheez Balls and Cheez Curls for a limited time. Starting in July, the '90s snack would be available in grocery stores nationwide.
“We heard many impassioned pleas for us to bring Cheez Balls and Cheez Curls back over the years and we wanted to give our fans a chance to reunite with their most-missed cheesy snack,” said Planters Head of Brand Building Melanie Huet. “We made sure our Cheez Balls and Cheez Curls still have the same delicious taste, airy texture and fluorescent color you know and love, so our fans can enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane with every canister.”
SURGE, Coca-Cola's florescent green soft drink that debuted in 1996, was available only until the early 2000s.
However, the drink had a cult-like following and convinced Coca-Cola to bring back the soda in 2014. It was originally a limited time offer available only on Amazon. A year later the company began selling SURGE in convenience stores.
Crispy M&M's disappeared from store shelves for about a decade until a fan campaign convinced Mars Chocolate North America to bring them back in 2015. Crispy M&M's were first available in 1998 as a limited time offer.
They are now available in Crunchy Espresso, Crunchy Raspberry and Crunchy Mint as well.
French Toast Crunch
Again, a Facebook campaign helped bring back a '90s fan favorite food. General Mills re-released French Toast Crunch in 2014 after it was discontinued in 2006.
The cereal had always been available in Canada under the name Croque Pain Doré.
As stated on General Mills' blog: "Devotees know that the cereal remained in production in Canada, but only a lucky few would score a box of the coveted Canadian French Toast Crunch and the shipping fees were often steep."
The clear cola known as Crystal Pepsi was brought back in 2015 for what was supposed to be a limited time. It was part of a "Summer of Crystal Pepsi" promotion that included a version of the '90s computer game "Oregon Trail" that Pepsi dubbed "The Crystal Pepsi Trail."
"We've always had a special place in our heart for Crystal Pepsi, and there has been a huge groundswell of support to bring it back," said Stacy Taffet, Senior Director, Marketing, Pepsi. "What better way to celebrate this iconic 90s cola than to introduce a new take on one of the most beloved games of the decade. Totally rad!"
According to its website, Crystal Pepsi is still available from Amazon, Target and Walmart.
Carnation Breakfast Bars
The "Bring Back Original Carnation Breakfast Bars" Facebook page was founded in 2010 and currently has almost 7,000 followers, but it hasn't updated since January 2017. There was also a Change.org petition started in 2013 to bring back the bars, but it received only about 300 supporters.
Neither effort has been enough to bring back the '80s favorite.
Doritos 3D was discontinued in the early 2000s.
There are several fan pages for Doritos 3D, but the biggest is the Facebook group simply called "Doritos 3D," which lists its mission as "To find all lovers of Doritos 3D. To unite and to speak of our passion of Doritos 3D." It currently has about 12,000 followers.
Doritos mentioned Doritos 3D in this 2014 tweet, in which it said the chips would not be coming back:

A now closed petition on Change.org has more than 10,000 supporters who want to bring back Snapple Elements drinks that were popular in the '90s.
Their mission: "The Snapple Elements drinks (Earth, Rain, Sun, Fire) were some of the most amazing beverages around. Let's send a message to the Snapple Beverage Corp that they should bring these drinks back, recyclable glass bottle and all."
The effort got the group a mention in a 2015 Buzzfeed article, "13 Petitions All '90s Kids Must Sign Immediately," but the drinks remain out of production.
Keebler Magic Middles
About 2,300 users have like a Facebook page dedicated to the return of Keebler Magic Middles. One post claimed the chocolate-filled shortbread cookies were available from Walmart, but the link is no longer functioning.
Amazon also has a peanut butter version on its site, but the items are no longer available.
The once popular Gatorgum from Gatorade was discontinued in 1989. It was available in lemon-lime and orange and claimed that it "helps quench thirst."
A Facebook page simply called Gatorgum has about 700 followers. One post from earlier this year stated, "They're bringing back 'Roseanne', they brought back 'Full House', and Trump is bringing back 'Reaganomics'...... Let's make 2018 the year we bring back something truly useful, let's bring back GATORGUM!!"
Red Ropes were first introduced in the mid-1960s. They were sold in plexiglass cases on convenience store shelves that only the store clerk had access to. They eventually came in plastic wrap like other candies, but were discontinued as a standalone product in the mid-1990s. They continued to be available in a mixed bag of candy, but after letters from fans and requests from retailers urging to bring them back, American Licorice Co. recently decided to bring them back.
A representative from American Licorice Co. said that sales and popularity of Red Ropes has exceeded expectations since being reintroduced.
Sour Punch Grape Straws
The grape flavor of Sour Punch Straws was introduced in the 90s. Unfortunately for the straws, there were also a ton of grape-flavored cough syrups and other medicines on store shelves that had a similar flavor. Kids apparently didn't want candy that reminded them of medicine, so the product was discontinued, according to Kristi Shafer, VP of Marketing at American Licorice Company, which makes Sour Punch Straws.
Over the years, especially with the ease of voicing opinions on social media, Sour Punch has received many requests to “bring back grape.” Sour Punch listened and is bringing back the grape flavor for a limited time.
