MATTOON — Rosie Matthews became the newest member of the Mattoon Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame recently. Matthews joins Lena McCall, Wanda Shirey, Betty Slugocki, Mabel Crean, Edna Foulke, Corma Jane Taylor, Dorothy Hoefler and Mary Johnson.Charlie Authenreith also became the newest member of the men's Mattoon Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Ned Gullion, secretary of the bowling association, presented Authenreith with his hall of Fame plaque at the annual banquet... MATTOON — Being informed on current affairs covered in Time magazine paid off for four Lake Land College students. After tabulation of scores, Kathleen Fry and Sam Carter tied for first place while Steve Thompson and Steve Childress tied for third place.The students split the award money meaning the top two winners $20 each and third place winners $5 each.The test was open to all Lake Land students.

MATTOON — The Walmart Supercenter has a liquor license. The store now sells beer and wine in its grocery section. Walmart recently applied for and received a grocery store liquor license. The license became available last year with the closing of the Broadway Avenue IGA. Walmart applied for a license in March 1994. At that time, none were available, and Mayor Wanda Ferguson refused to increase the number... MATTOON — Coles County Treasurer W.F. "Bill" Grimes recently was elected president of the Illinois County Treasurer's Association. Grimes, of Mattoon, was elected Coles County treasurer in 1986. In the past nine years he has been secretary and treasurer of the association, in addition to being vice president four times... MATTOON — Lake Land College English instructor Jan Kidd has been awarded the Outstanding Service Award, sponsored by the Lake Land College Faculty Association. Kidd, of Toledo, was recognized by her peers for her efforts at the college beyond her classroom responsibilities. She has served as the faculty association president for two years and secretary for one year.
