If holiday stress and travel have interrupted your sleep schedule, you may be tempted to reach for a prescription sleep aid to get some much-needed shut eye. Before you try a more intense sleep aid, reach for these essential oils.

1) Lavender

Lavender is at the top of the list for relaxing essential oils for good reason. Not only is it easy to find in most pharmacies, it’s also been shown in studies to help subjects get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. To use lavender for a better night’s sleep, put a few drops in an essential oil diffuser, or mix several drops with water, shake, and mist your pillow before bed.

2) Roman Chamomile

Drinking a cup of chamomile tea has long been a folk remedy for restless nights and insomnia, so it’s no surprise the essential oil can also help promote relaxation. The light floral scent is soothing, but a little goes a long way. A few drops of this oil in a diffuser will help create a serene atmosphere in your bedroom.

3) Sandalwood

If you’re not a fan of floral scents, try sandalwood essential old for a deep sleep. This earthy scented oil has been shown to have sedative effects and increase relaxation. Use this oil sparingly or blend with another soothing fragrance like vanilla, since large amounts of undiluted sandalwood can have the opposite effect.
