MATTOON — Since assuming ownership of Jake’s Discount Carpet & Storage earlier this year, Cory Sanders has upgraded this business and welcomed new paint and wallpaper shops to the property.
Sanders said he opted to purchase Jake’s because its carpeting and storage services go “hand in hand” with his Sanders & Company Real Estate and Apex Property Management businesses, both based in Mattoon.
Jake’s Discount Carpet & Storage is located at 1109 S. 19th St., a block west of U.S. Route 45/Lake Land Boulevard.
Sanders’ renovations to the carpet building have included installing a new facade, electric service and lighting, as well as making masonry repairs.
“It was just a total overhaul of the building,” Sanders said. “The building looks much more like a store now when you come in, for our customers.”
Sanders said he has started expanding the store’s stock, which covers laminant and hardwood flooring, carpets and remnants, and vinyl and carpet tiles for commercial and residential use.
Jake’s also special orders flooring as needed and handles installations.
In addition, Sanders said he has cleaned up the storage units at Jake’s and upgraded their gates and on-site surveillance system.
He said the property holds 380 storage units of varying sizes.
Sanders said the storage units will complement the U-Haul service that he has purchased from Stacey Taylor, whose Stacey’s House of Colors paint and varnish shop recently moved into a storefront on the Jake’s property.
This property is also now home to A Way to the Better There Be, a new discount wallpaper and home decor store owned by Salisa Hortenstine Olmsted.
She purchased the former Jake’s Discount Wallpaper business.
“We feel like (the property) is going to be a one-stop shop for Coles County and the surrounding area,” Sanders said.
Jake’s Discount Carpet is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday each week.
