Learning to swim is a valuable skill as it not only develops confidence but also creates safety when visiting the pool, lake or ocean. You do not have to have to wait until summer to enroll your kids in swim lessons. At the Mattoon Area Family YMCA swim lessons are offered year-round. Currently we have registration open for our next eight week session.
Recently the swim lesson curriculum at the Mattoon Y was updated with the purpose of giving youth the opportunity to learn quicker, become safer sooner, and progress more quickly through the various levels.
Group swim lessons at the Y begin as early as six months of age with the parent/child lessons. With these levels, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills. Parents learn water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision when around water. Youth through age three may be enrolled in these valuable parent/child lessons.
Beginning at age 3, youth may start group lessons without a parent in the water. Participants will begin with the swim basics and progress through three levels before moving on to stroke development. Group lessons are available through age 12. Anyone over 12, including adults, is encouraged to inquire about our private and semi-private lessons.
With the changes in the curriculum, parents are commenting that their kids are receiving more out of each lesson. They truly are learning quicker and retaining skill. Our instructors are also enjoying the new lesson plans as they are more instructional and prepare our staff to give the best lessons possible.
The next session of indoor swim lessons is set to begin March 5th. Registration will remain open through Feb. 26. Lessons are offered during the evening hours as well as on Saturday mornings. Y swim lessons are available to both Y members and non-members. Members do receive a discount on lesson prices. Fees are as follows: $28 for Y members; $56 for non-members. A session meets for eight weeks/one day per week.
If you are interested in receiving the member rate, we recommend joining the Y now as we are waiving the joining fee on all new memberships. Members also receive discounted pricing for programs such as adult sports, youth sports, summer camp and child watch.
