At the Mattoon YMCA, the New Year is an exciting time as we offer sports programs for all ages. Joining a sports team allows you to connect with others and to stay active while improving skill.
For our youth, registration for Dodgeball will open on Jan. 8. This fun-filled sport is played with foam balls. With no weekly practices, this game keeps the kids active during the cold winter months and allows them to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.
Youth Dodgeball is open to youth ages 6 to 14 regardless of if the child is a Y member. Members do receive discounted pricing and early registration is encouraged for the best rates. Register between Jan. 8 and Feb. 11 for the following rates: $25 for Y members; $45 for non-members. Registrations received between Feb. 12 and March 4 will increase by $10.
Our season is set to begin March 12 and will run through May 15 with games played on Monday and Tuesday nights. Leagues will be divided by age and gender based on registration numbers.
For adults, sports programs give you an opportunity to continue with a sport you may be passionate about while also staying active and finding time to spend with friends. Upcoming adult sports programs include Adult Co-ed Volleyball and 3-on-3 Basketball.
Registration for Co-ed Volleyball remains open until Jan. 19 with the season set to begin Jan. 31. Matches will be played on Wednesday evenings between 7:30 p.m and 9 p.m. Registration for this sport is done individually but each person will be asked for the name of their team at the time of registration.
Anyone 16 or older may register for Co-ed Volleyball and new teams are encouraged to enroll. Teams may include a mix of both members and non-members and current pricing for this league is $30 for Y members and $50 for non-members. Get creative with your team name and join!
3-on-3 Basketball has registration open for the next season which is set to begin Feb. 8. This is a full court league with a seven-week season followed by a single elimination tournament. Games will take place on Thursday evenings and just like with any of our adult sports, league champions will receive t-shirts.
Just as with all our adult sports programs, anyone 16 or older may register. Register as an individual but get your team together for a great season on the courts. Register by Jan. 19 for the best rates of: $20 for Y members; $40 for non-members. Rates will increase by $10 between Jan. 20 and Feb. 2.
Registration for any of these sports may be done online at www.mattoonymca.org, in-person at the Mattoon Y or by phoning the YMCA at 217-234-9494. Payment is required at the time of registration and scholarship does apply to these sports.
YMCAs were founded on the idea of giving back to the community and in the early days of the YMCA most programs were run almost entirely by volunteers. At the Mattoon Area Family YMCA programs such as youth sports still depend on the passion and abilities of our volunteers. If you would be interested in coaching during the upcoming Youth Dodgeball program or for any future youth programs such as soccer, Girls on the Run, STRIDE and basketball, consider visiting https://mattoonymca.org/volunteer. Additional volunteer opportunities include special events and helping with tasks within the Y.
The Mattoon Area Family YMCA is a non-profit organization with a focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Visit the Y at 221 N. 16th Street, Mattoon.
