CHARLESTON -- Traffic lights will be implemented next year at the intersection of Illinois Route 16 and Loxa Road.

The traffic lights will be installed in the summer as a result of the growing amount of traffic at the intersection.

Tim Hemmen, study and plans engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said there's a lot of traffic turning onto Route 16 from Loxa Road. More are turning left and right off of Loxa Road.

Hemmen said this information is gathered from data that determines how busy the road is.

The traffic at the intersection has mounted as a result of more motorists use Loxa Road as a through road to the highway or off it, he said. It has become a popular site to get onto the highway for many businesses along Loxa Road, including Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

Right now, the IDOT is in the bidding process for the implementation of the lights. Depending on weather and other factors, the project will take around two to three months to complete, Hemmen said.

Hemmen said because of the proximity with the traffic lights at the intersection of Route 16 and Lerna Road, officials might have to sequence the two light systems. He added that is something they will be assessing before the lights are put in. The two intersections are two miles apart.
