MATTOON (JG-TC) -- Two court appearances have been set for a case of a Mattoon man arrested in connection with an incident involving a shooting in June.
Monday, a motion hearing for Kevin W. Johnson, 38, was scheduled for 9 a.m. Sept. 16 in courtroom 1 of the Coles County Courthouse. Also, a status hearing was set for 2 p.m. Sept. 29.
Johnson, for whom records list an address of 2100 Prairie Ave., Mattoon, has been charged with attempted armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, as has another man, Matthew S. Cook, 31, who has addresses on record on Charleston Avenue in Mattoon and on County Road 800N in rural Coles County.
They are accused of trying to rob James Todd Shafer, who allegedly fired the shots that killed Ciara J. Faires at a Mattoon residence in the June incident.
Shafer, 24, for whom court records list an address of 413 1/2 N. 20th St., is set to appear in court Thursday along with another man accused of a role in the confrontation, Shawn D. Adamson, 33, for whom records list addresses on Charleston Avenue in Mattoon and in Kankakee.
Adamson was at large after the shooting and later arrested in Centralia. He is also suspected of firing a gun during the incident and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Also at the Monday hearing, attorney Terese Matthews, representing Johnson, made a motion for a bond reduction to 10 percent of $5,000. The motion was denied.
