MATTOON -- A motorist said he didn't see a bicyclist before hitting the cyclist on a road in rural Coles County on Saturday night, according to a police report.

The accident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday on County Road 1000N, an access road to Interstate 57 also known as County Highway 18, about two miles north of Mattoon, a report from the Coles County Sheriff's Office said.

The report said the cyclist, Gary W. Gravile, 61, 2209 Prairie Ave., Mattoon, was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana after the accident. He's since been released, a Carle representative said Monday.

The report said the car driven by Daniel C. Jones, 49, 2009 Evergreen Court, Mattoon, and Gravil were both eastbound on County Road 1000N when the accident took place.

Gravil said he was riding on the shoulder of the road but crossed over the shoulder line into the roadway before Jones' car hit him, the report said.

It said Gravil's bicycle had a flashing red light on its back. Jones said he never saw the cyclist and stopped when he heard the impact, according to the report.
