CHARLESTON — Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Geneva Carlet of Charleston will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 27. Their family celebration has been postponed due to COVID. They would love to hear from friends and family with cards and letters.
Carlet and Geneva Krackenberger were married June 27, 1945, at St. John's of the Cross in Middlebury, Conn. They were attended by Olga Reale and Amedeo Perrin.
They are the parents of Frank (Eloise) Carlet, III of Powell, Ohio; Jim (Karen) Carlet of Mission, Kan.; Joseph Carlet (deceased) and widow Joy Carlet of Dallas, Texas; Gigi Boyd (Ernie, deceased) of Springfield; and Charlotte (Ken) Gano of Charleston. They also have nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carlet retired from Ameren in 1986. Mrs. Carlet retired from selling real estate, stocks and bonds.

MATTOON — Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Helen Dowling celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Friday, June 12. No gifts are requested, but cards would be welcome.
Edward "Ed" Dowling and Helen Osborne were married June 12, 1955, at the First Christian Church by Dr. A. Mont Massey.
They are the parents of Gary Russell Dowling of Bee Cave, Texas; and Andrew Neil Dowling of Mattoon; They also have six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Dowling retired as the Counseling Psychologist and Assistant Administrator at the former Mattoon Area Adult Education Center, having taught at Stewardson-Strasburg previously. He served as a Navy Aviation Electronic Tech from 1953-1957. He enjoys playing golf and was one of the founders of the Mattoon Alumni Lettermans Club and is a current member of the Mattoon Exchange Club.
Mrs. Dowling retired as a Realtor for McCrocklin Realty. She was one of the first organizers of the Mattoon Bagelfest as YMCA business manager. As a P.E.O. member and homemaker, she is also an accomplished hand-quilter with a quilt registered with the State of Illinois.
CHARLESTON — Dr. Donald W. and Mrs. Janet R. Smitley will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, June 18.
Smitley and Janet Rambo were married on June 18, 1960, at the Church of Christ in Hartford.
They are the parents of John (Melanie) Smitley of Charleston; and Cynthia (James) Patten of Dardenne Prairie, Mo. They also have five grandchildren.
Dr. Smitley retired in 2000 after serving as professor of educational administration at Eastern Illinois University for 30 years. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He previously served as an elder in the Charleston and Mattoon Presbyterian Churches. He also served as a member and tenor soloist in numerous church choirs.
Mrs. Smitley was employed at Convalescent Centers in Charleston, Paris and Effingham where she served at various administrative positions. She was also a Sunday School teacher, elder and choir member of the Charleston Presbyterian Church. An accomplished artist, she also served as an illustrator for mathematics textbooks for the University of Illinois.
Mr. and Mrs. Smitley also traveled extensively in the United States and abroad with family and friends.
