CHARLESTON (JG-TC) -- Charleston High School speech team members qualified for state competition Saturday in both individual events and the performance in the round category.

At the sectional tournament at Belleville West High School, team members Michael Grovier, Eric Poe and Sharifa Etoe qualified for next weekend's state event.

Grovier took third in extemporaneous speaking. and Poe and Etoe were second in humorous duet acting.

The performance in the round cast also took third place at the sectional to advance. Cast members are Deacon Brooks, Logan Williams, Emily Gawel, Joe Perez, Taylor Fleming, Nicolle Kuyrkendall, Jacob Bishop, Rosa Coit, Revé Kastl, Sarah Baron, D'Arcy Johnson and June Baumann.

Other CHS team members who reached the finals in individual events but didn't qualify for state were Norah Blache, fifth in dramatic interpretation and seventh in poetry reading, and Emma Banyai, fifth in impromptu speaking.

Others who qualified for the sectional at the previous week's regional tournament were Alyssa Brazzell in informative speaking, Madi Colman in oratorical declamation and original oratory, Poe in poetry reading, Banyai in radio speaking and Grovier in special occasion speaking.
