Police said the charges stem from his involvement in the fatal shooting of his 22-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Samantha L. Cushing, on Monday morning. Cushing was shot at a home on Will Street in Shelbyville.

Later that morning, officers with the Effingham Police Department attempted to take Barger into custody and he fled, leading police on a multi-county chase before being arrested in Christian County, state police said.
