MATTOON — Police officers recently arrested a Mattoon woman for allegedly stealing nearly $13,000 from an elderly victim.
A Mattoon Police Department press release reported the 40-year-old woman was arrested on preliminary charges of financial exploitation of the elderly, forgery, and possession of methamphetamine. Preliminary charges are subject to review by the state's attorney's office.
The arrest occurred at 10:30 a.m. Friday just after Mattoon officers and Coles County deputies served a search warrant at her residence on Old State Road in Mattoon.
The charges allege that the woman financially exploited an 89-year-old victim out of just under $13,000, and personally forged checks belonging to the victim. Several of the victim's personal blank checks were reportedly located during the search of the woman's residence, along with less than 5 grams of meth. The woman was taken to the Coles County jail.
