MATTOON -- Police officers arrested a Mattoon man on preliminary charges of heroin and methamphetamine possession Friday evening.

A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that Cedric R. Fleming, 29, homeless in Mattoon, was arrested on these preliminary charges at 10:41 p.m. in the 2300 block of Champaign Avenue after a traffic stop. He also was charged with drug equipment possession for allegedly having a drug scale. Fleming was taken to the Coles County jail.

Regarding other arrests, Malcolm F. Hamilton, 46, of Mattoon was arrested on a preliminary meth possession charge at 11:09 a.m. Friday in the 1700 block of Dewitt Avenue after a traffic stop. He was taken to the jail.

Separately, Britney L. Pauley, 31, of Mattoon was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary and forgery at 2 p.m. Friday at the jail, where she was already in custody on other charges. Pauley allegedly unlawfully entered a motor vehicle in the 600 block of Wabash Avenue and stole a wallet containing checks from it on Aug. 1. She then is accused of using the stolen checks to purchase items at a Mattoon convenience store.

In another arrest, Austin R. Lee, 20, of Mattoon was arrested on preliminary charges of residential burglary and unlawful possession of another’s credit card at 3:10 p.m. Friday at the police station. Lee allegedly unlawfully entered a residence in the 2600 block of Champaign Avenue and stole a wallet containing a debit card from there on Aug. 16. He then is accused of unlawfully using the ATM card for currency. Lee was taken to the jail.

Separately, Blake I. Wheeler, 36, and Christa L. Connour, 29, both of Mattoon, were arrested at 7:44 p.m Friday. Wheeler was charged with domestic battery, alleging he grabbed, shoved, and knocked down a female during a domestic dispute in the 1400 block of Piatt Avenue. Connour was charged with violation of bail bond, alleging she was at this location with previous court orders not to be there. Wheeler was taken to the jail. Connour was issued a court date and was released.

In another incident, Ashley M. Berthelette, 29, of Mattoon was arrested on a preliminary theft charge at 8:05 p.m. Saturday at Walmart. Berthelette allegedly entered Walmart numerous times and stole items from there between July 4 and Aug. 24. Berthelette was issued a court date and was released.

Separately, Tony J. Bragg, 43, of Mattoon was arrested on a charge of failure to report change of address as a sex offender at 10:51 p.m. Sunday in the 4100 block of south U.S. Route 45. Police allegedly located Bragg residing at Motel 6 and found that he had been staying there since late July, but had not changed his registered address. Bragg was sent to the jail.
