MATTOON -- The City Council is scheduled to hold a budget work session during a special meeting at 8 a.m. today in the Lone Elm Room at the train depot, 1718 Broadway Ave.

The agenda for the work session calls for council members and city department directors to review proposed budgetary items in preparation for presenting the fiscal year 2019-20 city budget to the council for a vote in April.

Mattoon has been operating under a 2018-19 city budget that was projected to have a deficit of nearly $750,000 when the council approved it on April 17, 2018. City officials have attributed the deficit to rising pension and other personnel costs, minimal growth in local revenue from sales and property taxes, and uncertainty over state revenue levels.
