MATTOON (JG-TC) -- A man was arrested for drug and weapons offenses after he fled from the scene of a traffic stop, according to police.

Zachery M. Riley, 23, of Mattoon was arrested after the traffic stop in the 1400 block of Broadway Avenue on Tuesday, a news release from the Mattoon Police Department said.

It said Riley was a passenger in the vehicle that was stopped and fled on foot. He was soon found and had methamphetamine and a handgun in his possession, the release said.

His arrest for having the gun was because of a felony conviction on his record and the amount of methamphetamine found led his arrest for possession with intent to deliver, the news release said.

Also, a charge of armed violence is possible because Riley had the gun and the methamphetamine at the same time, it said. The release said the East Central Illinois Task Force drug investigation unit helped with the arrest.
