MATTOON -- Community members in the Mattoon and Charleston area woke up today to find that snowfall had blanketed East Central Illinois overnight.

City and state crews have worked throughout the night and into the morning to plow snow covered roadways, including Illinois Route 16, Broadway Avenue and Richmond Avenue in Mattoon. Private snowplow crews also have been working, including in the parking lot of the Cross County Mall in Mattoon.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police have advised motorists not to be out driving during the snowfall if they do not have to be out on the roads.

Snow was continuing to fall at about 8 a.m. in Mattoon. Updates on the snowfall will be posted later in the day. Readers are encouraged to email snowfall related story ideas and photos to editorial@jg-tc.com.
