MATTOON — Police officers arrested a Mattoon man who allegedly threatened to shoot them with a shotgun and brandished a baseball bat at them early Tuesday.

The Mattoon Police Department reported Ryan M. Wallace, 36, was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated assault at 1:52 a.m. in the 1700 block of Walnut Avenue. The arrest occurred after police conducted a well-being check on him at a family member's request.

According to the charge, Wallace made verbal threats to shoot police officers with a shotgun during the well-being check. The charge also alleges that Wallace approached police in an aggressive manner with a baseball bat after they entered the residence.

Wallace was arrested and taken to the Coles County jail. The state's attorney's office subsequently filed an aggravated assault of a police officer charge against Wallace on Tuesday.

Bond was set at a level at which Wallace needed to post $3,000 in order to be released from custody. He posted bond Tuesday night. His status hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Wallace indicated during his bond hearing that he plans to hire private legal counsel.
