Mattoon man sentenced to prison for drug delivery in fatal overdose case

CHARLESTON — A Mattoon man has been sentenced to seven years in prison on a drug delivery charge in a case that involved a fatal overdose of heroin.

Thomas C. Eich, 28, received this sentence for a charge of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance during a hearing on Friday in Coles County Circuit Court. He was given credit for 485 days already served at the Coles County jail.

Coles County jury acquits man of drug-induced homicide charge

Eich had been jailed since Kody R. Matheny, 23, was found dead due to an overdose on Aug. 9, 2018 at his Mattoon residence.

Friday's sentencing followed a jury convicting Eich on Sept. 26 of providing Matheny with heroin containing fentanyl. Eich admitted doing so when he testified during his trial.

The jury acquitted Eich of a charge of drug-induced homicide regarding Matheny's death. Eich's attorney, Assistant Public Defender Stephanie Corum, argued that there was no way to know if Matheny obtained more drugs once he left Eich's residence.
