ARCOLA — Arcola Community Schools will be hosting the annual Veteran's Day Assembly on Monday, Nov. 11 beginning at 1:30 p.m., following a luncheon for the veterans (beginning at noon).

This year's guest speaker will be Major Nicole Bastian, USMC, commander of the St. Louis Recruiting Station. Following a successful tour as an Officer Selection Officer, finishing second in the Eastern Recruiting Region rankings, Captain Bastian was selected for and reported to Expeditionary Warfare School in July 2014. She was the Expeditionary Warfare School class president.

Promoted to Major in April 2015, she was assigned to 3d Marine Division as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff G-1, where she also served as the Division Manpower Officer, G-1 Operations Officer, Deputy Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Korean Theater of Operations Red Cell Team Leader, and the Senior Watch Officer for Ulichi Freedom Guardian 16.

From September 2016 to May 2017, Major Bastian served in the S-3 at 4th Marine Regiment as the Future Operations Officer. Major Bastian assumed command of Recruiting Station St. Louis in June 2017.

Following the assembly, the Arcola VFW will host an Unserviceable Flag Ceremony outside, for the respectful disposal of worn and tattered flags. If you have a flag that needs to be properly disposed of, you can drop them off at the Arcola Post Office, Arcola Public Library, Arcola First Bank (lobby), 1st-Mid Bank of Arcola (lobby).

The ceremony will be streamed live on the Arcola High School Torch Facebook page.

AHS is believed to host the largest and longest-running student-led Veteran's Day Assembly in the area, with students from kindergarten through high school participating.
