EFFINGHAM -- An Altamont motorcyclist was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a crash in which he was seriously injured Monday night near the Lake Sara dam in Effingham County.

The Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred as Douglas M. Buening, 60, was riding his motorcycle north on East Park Avenue and crossed over the center point of the roadway into the southbound path of a passenger car driven by Jade J. Price of Effingham at 10:40 p.m. just south of Augusta Drive.

Price reportedly attempted to avoid the collision by braking and swerving onto the west shoulder of the roadway. Due to the distance Buening had already drifted across the center of the roadway, a sideswipe collision occurred as the motorcycle struck the driver’s side of the car.

Buening suffered serious injuries that required him to be taken from the scene by helicopter for treatment at an area hospital. Buening was later cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Price, 29, was ticketed for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
