MATTOON -- Police officers recently arrested two Mattoon men on domestic battery charges in separate cases.
A Mattoon Police Department press release reported that Adebayo J. Aofolaju, 27, was arrested on charges of domestic battery and obstructing identification, plus having an active Cook County warrant for a probation violation on a dangerous drugs charge. The arrest occurred at 1:46 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of West Park Plaza after officers were dispatched there regarding a domestic disturbance call.
While investigating the call, the officers reportedly located Aofolaju hiding in an apartment closet. The charges allege that Aofolaju initially provided false identification information for himself in an attempt to not be arrested for the warrant. The charges also allege that Aofolaju grabbed a female and shoved her around the apartment during the domestic disturbance. Aofolaju was taken to the Coles County jail.
In other matters, Lester J. Towns, 27, was arrested on charges of domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence. The arrest occurred at 8:27 p.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of Rudy Avenue after officers responded to a 911 call of a female yelling into the phone for help there.
The officers subsequently learned that there had allegedly been a domestic disturbance between Towns and the female caller. Towns allegedly argued with the female and refused to allow her to leave in her vehicle. The charge alleges that when the female called 911 for police help, Towns took her cellphone away and struck her two times in the face. Towns was taken to the jail.
