MATTOON -- A Mattoon man fatally shot his wife and then committed suicide late Friday evening in their family's home, an autopsy has found.

Officers with the Mattoon police union have established a Community Care Fund to seek monetary donations for the family following this tragedy, Chief Jason Taylor said. Donations can be made at any location of First Mid Bank & Trust.

"We feel pretty strongly about this Community Care Fund. We hope people will donate to it," Taylor said.

The Mattoon Police Department released more information regarding the murder-suicide after an autopsy was conducted on Monday. The Coles County Coroner's Office had previously identified the two deceased individuals as Joseph McFarland, 37, and Rachel McFarland, 36

Taylor said the autopsy found that the man shot the woman several times before fatally shooting himself. Taylor said emergency responders were dispatched at 11:55 p.m. Friday to a home in the 800 block of Oklahoma Avenue after a neighbor heard the gunshots and called 911. Taylor said the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital and the man died at the scene.
