MATTOON -- A Mattoon man is still hospitalized after his car struck the railing on the Charleston Avenue bridge early Wednesday morning.

A Mattoon Police Department crash report stated that Chad E. Perry of Mattoon was driving north on Lake Land Boulevard when he struck the railing at the "T intersection" with Charleston Avenue at 2:11 a.m.

From the nearby police station, an officer responded to this crash and used the fire extinguisher from his squad car to extinguish flames emanating from under the damaged car while Perry was trapped within this vehicle.

The Mattoon Fire Department extricated Perry from his car, and the Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service then took him to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment of injuries.
