MATTOON -- The deaths of two people found at a Mattoon home late Friday are being called a murder-suicide, according to police.

A man and a woman were both found deceased at a home in the 800 block of Oklahoma Avenue when police arrived about 11:55 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from Mattoon police.

The release said both the man and the woman had been shot and the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

On Saturday, Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers released the names of the deceased: Joseph McFarland, 37, and Rachel McFarland, 36. Schniers confirmed that the deaths were by gunshot and said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

It said police were called to the home on a report of a homicide but there is no danger to the public.

No additional information from Mattoon police was available.
