MATTOON — Homes are safe to occupy after being evacuated and Marshall Avenue is open to traffic again after being closed due to a gas leak in the 1600 block, just east of Lake Land Boulevard.

Emergency responders left the scene about 2:25 p.m., while Ameren Illinois crews remained in the area doing repairs as of 2:55 p.m.

Police, fire and other officials notified residents around the 1600 block of Marshall Avenue of a reported gas leak at approximately 1 p.m. Homes in about a one-block radius at 16th Street and Marshall Avenue were evacuated.

Marshall Avenue east of Lake Land Boulevard was blocked off for more than an hour due to the incident.
