CHARLESTON -- The state of Illinois is suing a rural Coles County salvage yard for tire burning reported at the site two years ago.

Tire burning, improper disposal and record keeping violations were discovered at Coles County Auto Salvage Yard in rural Oakland during an inspection on Feb. 23, 2017, according to the case.

The lawsuit filed by the Illinois Attorney General's Office says it was based on an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency inspection that followed a citizen complaint.

The named defendants are Richard and Monika Purdy, who are listed as the salvage yard's owners. The lawsuit says the salvage yard was also never registered to do business in the state.

A phone number for the salvage yard was no longer in service and attempts to find contact information for the Purdys were unsuccessful.

The lawsuit was filed this week and there are currently no hearing dates scheduled. It seeks an immediate remedy to the environmental violations and fines against the business.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
