2 teens arrested for spray painting Mattoon church, homes, vehicles

MATTOON — Two teenagers have been arrested for allegedly spray painting a church, residences and motor vehicles in Mattoon.

According to a Mattoon Police Department press release, multiple residents reported that their homes and vehicles were spray painted overnight Monday. This vandalism also was reported at Church of Christ South Side, 1100 S. 17th St.

The reports led officers to a residence on South 17th Street, where a 14-year-old male was located and arrested for his alleged role in the vandalism. An 18-year-old man also was arrested in connection to the spray paintings.

Both teens allegedly admitted to spray painting the properties and to not having any motives for why they did it. The 14-year-old was charged as a juvenile and will appear in the juvenile court system. The 18-year-old was arrested and taken to the Coles County jail.

The Coles County state's attorney's office will review the arrest report and determine if charges will be filed in court.
