Truck fire stops traffic on I-57

  • 0

TUSCOLA (JG-TC) -- Traffic was stopped on part of Interstate 57 in northern Douglas County on Wednesday night because of a fire in a tractor-trailer.

The truck's driver wasn't injured and the trailer's contents weren't damaged in the fire reported about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday about three miles north of Tuscola, according to a news release from Illinois State Police.

The release said the driver, Donald W. Shepard of Canton, Mo., was southbound on the interstate, stopped to turn on the truck's heater box and then noticed smoke coming from the engine.

The fire reached the truck's cab "within seconds" but crews from the Tuscola Fire Department responded and contained the fire, the release said.
