A car rests at the bottom of a deep ditch, narrowly missing a utility pole, late Tuesday along East County Road 250 North near the Meadowview Golf Course in Mattoon. The driver of the car was airlifted from the scene.

MATTOON — A 16-year-old rural Toledo girl was airlifted from the scene of an accident in southern Coles County Tuesday night.

Destiny P. Williams apparently over-corrected while driving on County Road 250N and lost control of her vehicle, according to the Coles County Sheriff's Office.

The vehicle then went off the other side of the road and hit an embankment, the sheriff's office indicated.

The office indicated that Williams was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, after the accident. She was hospitalized and listed in fair condition Wednesday afternoon, according to a Carle representative.

Williams was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, according to the sheriff's office.

The accident was reported at 10:12 p.m. and took place at 630 E. County Road 250N, which is just south of Meadowview Golf Course and east of Lake Land College.
